Robert Held Art Glass

Robert Held’s art glass collections range from classic to contemporary. From vases to bowls to hearts to paperweights, his designs are inspired by the work of famous artists such as Monet, Klimt and Tiffany. "Glassblowing allows me to explore both painterly concerns and my fascination with surface decoration, while continuing to challenge the other physical and creative skills required to take the vessel shape in ever new directions." It is a rare talent to conceive and create art that is recognized around the world as among the very best. His glasswork has been chosen for many prestigious awards and collections.

Exactly when the very first design of millefiori was created is not known, but the archeological testimonies place them during the Alexandrine and Roman times. The millefiori technique involves the production of glass canes or rods, known as murrine, with multicolored patterns which are viewable only from the cut ends of the cane. A murrine rod is heated in a furnace, pulled until thin while still maintaining the cross section's design, and then cut into beads or discs when cooled.
